Staying In Control

FairPlay Responsible Gaming — Tools & Real Help

My cousin keeps a small counter in a Meerut market selling cricket gear — grips, tape, the odd bat out of the Suraj Kund workshops — and through the IPL he puts a little on the evening game. One April Tuesday he worked out he had already spent the whole week's betting money by the second match. He did not panic and he did not quit. He opened his FairPlay account settings, set a weekly deposit cap, and went back to the game. This page is about exactly that: the controls sitting in your account, what each one costs you in flexibility, and where in India to get free help if a cap is not enough.

The Five Controls

Five FairPlay tools, and how hard each is to undo

Read the right-hand column first. A control you can switch off the second it becomes inconvenient is decoration rather than a control.

Account controls — what each one does, when it starts, and what it takes to reverse
ToolWhat it doesWhen it appliesReversing it
Deposit limitSets a ceiling on what you can add to the wallet in a day, a week or a monthFrom the second you save it, or lower itA raised figure has to wait out a holding period first
Loss limitStops you once net losses across your chosen window reach the figureStraight away — staking closes at the capThe same holding period before a bigger number counts
Session reminderPuts your elapsed time and net position on screen at whatever gap you pickFrom your next session onwardsChange it whenever you like; it restricts nothing
Cool-offShuts the account for a short, fixed stretchAt once, for anything from 24 hours to 30 daysNo early exit. The wallet balance is untouched and still yours
Self-exclusionEnds access for a long stretch, or for goodAt onceDeliberately final. Whatever sits in the wallet is paid back to you

Tightening is instant; loosening waits. Take that Tuesday in Meerut. He picked a weekly figure, hit save, and the cap was live before the phone was back on the counter — no approval queue, no email to confirm, nothing to wait for. Two hours later, with the chase properly under way, he went back in and tried to raise it. The new number was accepted and then parked: it sat there on screen, plainly visible, doing nothing at all until the holding period had run its course. By the time it would have taken effect the match was finished and he was asleep. That gap between making a decision and being able to act against it is the entire product.

All five live in your account settings, and support will switch any of them on for you without asking what it is about.

Worth Sitting With

Eight questions, no score at the end

There is nothing to add up here. These are the questions people who eventually asked for help say they wish somebody had put to them a year earlier.

  • Have you gone past the figure you set for yourself more than once this month?
  • Have you put a bigger stake on to fetch back what the last bet took?
  • Has betting money come out of a household budget, off a friend, or out of savings?
  • Do you round the number down when someone at home asks what you have staked?
  • Do you open the app mainly when you are bored, worried or flat?
  • Has it started costing you sleep, working hours, or an evening you had promised somebody?
  • Have you decided to cut back and then found the decision would not hold?
  • Would last month's transaction list embarrass you if somebody scrolled through it?

One yes is worth a pause. Two or three is worth saying out loud. Not necessarily to us — to somebody at home, to your doctor, or to one of the free services listed below. There is no severity you have to reach first. Nobody checks whether you have earned the right to talk to a person about it.

FairPlay Responsible Gaming Support: a support agent talking a player through guidance, limits and safer play
Most people leave it far longer than they need to. These services handle this every day of the week, and no minimum severity qualifies you.

Keeping it the size you meant it to be

Most people who bet keep it small without ever thinking hard about it. The ones who do not rarely cross any line in a single evening. It goes wrong over a run of decisions that each looked sensible at the time, every one sitting slightly further out than the last, which is precisely why it is so difficult to see while you are the person making them.

Chasing is the pattern worth watching for

Nearly every serious gambling problem has the same engine inside it. A bet loses. The next bet is bigger, and its job is to fetch back the last one. In that moment it feels like the level-headed response — you follow the sport, the previous result was rotten luck, a heavier stake squares the ledger and then you stop.

It is also the shortest road from a loss you can absorb to one you cannot, because that bigger stake was chosen under pressure rather than judgement. My cousin's tell is his thumb: he stops reading the price and simply taps. Yours will be something else, and it is worth knowing what it is. If you catch yourself raising stakes after a bad run, shut the app for the night. Not after the next match, and not once you are square.

Where the money came from says more than how much it was

Two people stake ₹5,000. One set it aside at the start of the month out of money that was going on entertainment anyway. The other took it out of the rent, or off a cousin, or out of a recurring deposit meant for something entirely different. Identical figure, two situations with nothing in common.

That test travels better than any rupee amount, because a sum that is comfortable in one household is reckless in the next. What you are watching for is a change of source. If your betting money used to come from one place and now comes from somewhere else, the size of it barely matters — the shift is the signal, and it usually shows up weeks before anything else does.

An hour at a fast table does not feel like an hour

Session reminders exist because human beings are poor at judging elapsed time, and worse at it when the game moves quickly. A live Andar Bahar table turns over a round roughly every thirty seconds. Sixty minutes of that goes past feeling like fifteen, particularly on a phone, particularly late at night when the shutter is already down and nobody is expecting you anywhere.

The reminder does not stop you or slow anything down. It puts the clock and your net position on screen at whatever interval you choose. More often than you would expect, seeing those two numbers side by side ends a session that had been carrying on out of momentum rather than any actual intent to keep playing.

The same account in Meerut and everywhere else in India

None of these controls is regional. A cap set on a phone behind a counter in Meerut is the same cap when that person opens the app at a wedding in Lucknow, or on a supplier trip to Jalandhar, or sitting in a train at Meerut City station on the way back. The account is the account. Limits, cool-off, exclusion, history and balance all belong to it rather than to the handset, the SIM or the pincode you happened to sign up from.

That matters more than it sounds. People sometimes assume a break can be walked around with a different phone, a friend's device, or a fresh install. It cannot. The restriction sits on the account itself, so signing in from anywhere reaches the same locked door. Everything else FairPlay India runs on works the same way — one account, one rupee wallet, the same rules whichever state you happen to be sitting in.

Languages and payment habits shift as you move around the country; the safety tools do not shift with them. Whatever you have set stays set while you travel, and it keeps running while you are asleep, offline, or between SIM cards.

If you have not opened an account yet

Then this is the cheapest possible moment to read this page, because you get to choose the ceiling before you have any reason to argue with it. During FairPlay register you confirm you are 18 or over and go through verification. The single most useful thing to do next, before any deposit at all, is a monthly cap at a figure you would be relaxed about losing in full. Say ₹2,000 a month, if ₹2,000 a month is genuinely spare in your house — pick your own number, and pick it while nothing whatsoever is riding on it.

The reason to do it on day one is that the tool is identical either way, but you are not. Choosing a cap on a quiet afternoon and choosing one at one in the morning after a bad over are two different mental acts, and only the first is really a choice. Once the account exists, every control on this page is a couple of taps from the FairPlay login screen, filed under Responsible Gaming in the account menu.

People who will offer to lift your break for a fee

This is the one scam that attaches itself specifically to responsible-gaming tools, so it is worth naming plainly. Somebody self-excludes, mentions it in a group chat or asks a question in a public forum, and within a day a stranger messages offering to reverse the exclusion, restore access, or open a fresh account for a small fee. Sometimes the stranger claims to work for us.

Nobody can end a cool-off or an exclusion early. Not our support team, not a manager, not the person messaging you. That is not a policy we bend on request; it is the reason the tool does anything at all. Anyone promising otherwise is after an advance payment or your sign-in details, and usually both.

The same applies to ready-made accounts offered over WhatsApp or Telegram. An account somebody else opened and still controls carries none of your protections and none of your safeguards over the money in it — and if you have taken a break, using one defeats the only decision that was working for you. Start any conversation from your own support chat inside the app, rather than from a message that arrived out of nowhere, and give an unsolicited offer of help around gambling exactly the suspicion it has earned.

If it is somebody else you are worried about

You cannot put a limit on another adult's account, and leaning on a person tends to buy defensiveness rather than change. What works better is describing what you have actually seen — the hours, the mood on a Sunday morning, money that went somewhere nobody can account for — instead of handing over a diagnosis or an ultimatum.

Assume the first conversation goes badly. That is the normal shape of it, not a reason to leave it there and never raise it again. The offer that helps is a practical one: sit with them while they ring Tele-MANAS, or go along to the doctor's appointment. The first step is nearly always the hard one, and it gets considerably easier with another person in the room.

What we hold up at our end

Every control described here is on every account, applies the moment it is saved, and can be arranged by support in a couple of minutes without a word of explanation from you. Account holders must be 18 or over, and age is checked at verification rather than taken on trust. Nobody on the support desk is measured on talking a customer out of a limit.

We also publish what playing actually costs instead of burying it. The house edge on each casino game, what an hour at a given table works out to, and precisely how bonus wagering clears — those numbers sit on the page rather than in a terms document that nobody opens. Somebody who knows what a game costs per hour is in a far better position to decide how much of it they want, and that turns out to be a more useful protection than any warning banner.

FAQ

Questions about caps, breaks and support

How each control behaves, and what changes on your account once you use one.

Talk to someone
How do I put a deposit cap on my FairPlay account?

Go to your account menu, open Responsible Gaming, and choose a daily, weekly or monthly figure. A new cap, or a lower one, is live the second you save it. Raising one is slow on purpose — the bigger number waits out a holding period before it counts, so no limit can be loosened halfway through a match. If you would rather not set it yourself, support will do it for you on chat in about two minutes.

Cool-off or self-exclusion — which one am I after?

A cool-off is a short shut-down, from 24 hours up to 30 days, and the account reopens by itself at the end of it. Self-exclusion is a long or permanent closure with no early exit. Both start immediately, and neither one touches your money: the wallet balance stays yours and can be withdrawn as normal while the break runs.

Can I change my mind once I have self-excluded?

Not until it expires, and that is the point of it rather than a flaw in it. A break you could cancel the moment you wanted to cancel it would not be a break at all. If you are unsure how long you need, take a cool-off instead — it is the flexible option and it can be extended. Self-exclusion is for when you want the decision taken out of your own hands.

Which warning signs are worth taking seriously?

Staking more than you meant to. Raising the stake to fetch back a loss. Borrowing, or spending money earmarked for something else. Trimming the number down when family ask. Betting to get away from stress or a flat mood. Losing sleep, working hours or somebody's patience over it. One of those on its own is worth a pause. Two or three together is worth saying out loud to another person.

Where can I find free help in India?

Tele-MANAS is the national tele-mental-health service, free and answered 24 hours on 14416 in several Indian languages. KIRAN, on 1800-599-0019, is a second free national line. Gamblers Anonymous runs peer meetings online and in a number of Indian cities. Your own doctor counts too, and is usually the least intimidating door to knock on first.

Can anyone under 18 hold a FairPlay account?

No. Eighteen is the floor, and age is confirmed during verification. If a phone or a laptop is shared with somebody younger, please switch on the device's own parental controls as well. An account-level rule cannot do much about a handset that is already open with a session signed in on it.

A friend of mine might have a problem — what can I actually do?

Bring it up quietly and without an audience, stick to what you have noticed rather than what you have concluded, and expect it to land badly the first time. Nobody can apply limits to another person's account. What you can do is point them at Tele-MANAS or their GP, and offer to be sitting there when the call gets made.

Does setting a limit affect my balance or my withdrawals?

Not in any way. A cap, a cool-off or an exclusion leaves your balance, your verification status and any pending payout exactly where they were. Money in the wallet is still your money and comes out through the usual route. Nobody from support will ask you to justify the decision or try to talk you back out of it.
