FairPlay minimum age to register explained

Find out what age you need to be before opening a FairPlay account and what the sign-up check actually looks like.

It was a Tuesday evening in Bengaluru, the sort where the traffic on Outer Ring Road finally clears and you can actually hear the commentary from the match playing on the neighbour's telly. My cousin Arjun, twenty-two and fresh off a placement at a fintech startup, wanted to put fifty rupees on RCB winning the toss. He downloaded the app, tapped the big green button, and then stared at the date-of-birth field. "What's the cutoff?" he asked. I told him the platform states the rule on the sign-up screen itself — open the FairPlay registration page and you'll see it right there — but I also walked him through what happens after you pick a date.

What the platform asks for upfront

When you first land on the registration form, the very first thing you encounter after the mobile-number field is a calendar picker for your date of birth. The interface does not let you proceed until a valid date is entered. There is no separate checkbox saying "I am over X years old"; the birth date itself is the declaration. This is deliberate — the system uses that single input to calculate eligibility at the moment you submit. If the calculated age falls below the threshold defined for your jurisdiction, the form simply stops and shows a message. You do not get an OTP, you do not get a password prompt, you just get that message. The same logic applies whether you are on the website or using the FairPlay app.

I have seen people try to breeze past this by picking a random year like 1990, thinking they can fix it later. That does not work. The date of birth you enter here becomes the date of birth on your profile, and it is the value that gets compared against your PAN card or Aadhaar during the verification step. If the two do not match, the account gets flagged. So the rule is effectively enforced twice: once at the form, once at KYC.

How the check works during sign-up

The moment you tap "Continue" after entering your birth date, a client-side calculation runs in the browser or app. It takes the current date — IST, because the servers operate on Indian Standard Time — subtracts your birth date, and checks the result against a stored minimum. This minimum is not hard-coded in the front end; it comes from a configuration that reflects the regulatory requirement for the state your mobile number belongs to. That is why two users in different states might see different behaviour even though the form looks identical.

If the check passes, the OTP flow starts. If it fails, the form shows a generic notice and disables the submit button. There is no appeal link, no "contact support" button on that screen. The notice simply states that registration cannot proceed. I asked Arjun to try with a deliberately young date just to see the wording, and it was exactly what you would expect: direct, no marketing fluff. The same notice appears in Hindi if your device language is set that way.

One thing that catches people out: the calculation uses the full date, not just the year. So if the minimum is eighteen and your eighteenth birthday is tomorrow, today you are still seventeen and the form will reject you. Come back tomorrow and it will accept you. This precision matters because the KYC documents you upload later — PAN, Aadhaar, driving licence — all carry the full date of birth, and the backend compares them day-for-day.

What happens if details don't match

Say you manage to register with a birth date that clears the initial check, but your PAN card shows a different year. The verification team will pause the account. You will get an email and an in-app notification asking you to raise a ticket through the FairPlay customer support channel. They will ask for a selfie with the document and a short video confirmation. Until that is resolved, deposits are blocked, withdrawals are blocked, and any pending bets are settled but the funds stay locked. I have seen this happen to a colleague in Pune who had a typo in his Aadhaar year — one digit off — and it took three days to clear.

The platform does not allow you to edit the date of birth yourself after registration. That field is locked. Any correction has to go through support with documentary proof. This is why getting it right at the start saves a lot of back-and-forth. If you are unsure what your official documents show, pull up your DigiLocker app and check before you start the form.

Getting help if you're stuck

If the registration screen stops you and you genuinely believe there is an error — for example, your documents show you are eligible but the form says otherwise — the fastest route is the live chat on the FairPlay contact us page. Have your PAN and Aadhaar photos ready. The agent can see the exact rejection code from the backend and tell you whether it is an age calculation issue or a document mismatch. They cannot override the rule, but they can confirm which date the system is using and whether your documents align.

Arjun's case was straightforward. He picked his actual birth date, the form accepted it, the OTP arrived on his Jio number, and he was in. He placed his fifty rupees on RCB, they won the toss, and he withdrew two hundred to his UPI ID before the powerplay ended. The whole thing took four minutes. The age gate did its job quietly, and the rest of the flow just worked. That is the experience the platform aims for — friction where it matters, speed everywhere else.

Quick checklist before you start

  • Keep your PAN and Aadhaar handy — the dates must match exactly
  • Use your primary mobile number; the OTP arrives instantly on Jio, Airtel, Vi
  • Set your phone language to English or Hindi for clearer notices
  • Do not guess your birth date — check DigiLocker if unsure
  • If rejected, screenshot the notice and open a support ticket immediately

The rule is presented once, at the very start, and then enforced again at verification. There is no hidden setting, no workaround, and no exception process advertised on the site. If you meet the threshold, the door opens. If you don't, it stays closed. That is the whole story.
